Stop youth homelessness before it starts.

Imagine you’re a young person with dreams...

Aminah had a dream of becoming a forensic scientist. She knew she wanted to go to university. But living in a three-bedroom home with eight members of her family meant no privacy or space to study. She was falling behind in her subjects and was at risk of homelessness.

She described her home as overwhelming.

There were no breaks, no place of my own. I was surrounded by family, 24/7, every single day... And I was everyone else’s support system. I was the oldest daughter. I was the big sister. I was the little mum … But I was never Aminah.”

Through your kind support, Kids Under Cover reached out to Aminah’s family to build a studio in their backyard. Now Aminah had a private space to study. She could keep her textbooks from getting ripped and damaged by her younger siblings. And she could have study buddies over, improving not only her friendships but her grades as well.

“Before, I was struggling with English and maths... but I never had two hours straight where I could just sit down and write an English essay. And I didn't have a space where I could just sit and do calculations all day. When I did, my maths and English scores improved amazingly. My teachers were surprised, even.”

The studio also did wonders for her family as it gave them room to breathe but still stay close to each other.

Now Aminah is in university and pursuing a forensic science degree. She’ll be the first person in her family to graduate from university. Who could imagine that by providing Aminah with her own space, it would open up a whole world of possibilities for the future?

“You provided more than just the bed and a room. I would love for you to understand it's not just a room that you’ve given, you’ve given me a second chance.”
